So depending on what brought you here, you may or may not already know my mystery destination. Well…………I’m going to COSTA RICA!! Heredia to be exact. For the next six weeks, I will be volunteering, along with several other participants, at a local school. Our project consists of two parts–renovation and intercultural exchange. We’ll be working to restore parts of the school that need attention and also beautifying the grounds. In addition, we’ll have the opportunity to teach the kids there about our different countries and cultures. (More details to come.) In honor of this first post, I thought it’d be nice to include a sort of Costa Rica bucket list. Here’s what I’ve come up with so far:

  1) The beach! (my host says the beaches in Guanacaste are the best)

  2) Volcanoes (esp. the Poás Volcano, Irazú Volcano, and Arenal Volcano)

  3) La Fortuna Waterfall

  4) Pre-Colombian Gold Museum

  5) National Theatre of Costa Rica

  6) National Parks (Manuel Antonio National Park, Tortuguero National Park,etc.)

  7) Monteverde Cloud Forest

  8) Visit Jaco

  9) To try all these foods

10) Experience the local nightlife

I’m so excited for this new adventure! I can’t wait to meet the other participants and see the school where we will be volunteering. To meet the children and the locals. To see the sights, and of course to EAT (If you know me well, you know I’m a foodie). Plus, one of my friends has traveled to Heredia before and she had such good things to say.

I can’t help but be a little nervous too. I’m hoping that everyone is as friendly as I’ve heard and that they will be understanding of my poor Spanish-speaking skills.
